U.S. impasse still to be broken

FXstreet.com (Barcelona) - While there is a realization by both political parties in the U.S. about a need to accelerate talks, so that the country can avoid a default on its debt, President Barack Obama, House Speaker John Boehner and their respective representatives failed yet again to make any significant progress over the weekend.

With the latest rejection of a possible short term debt deal compromise on the basis of spending and taxes disagreements, Senate Majority Leader Harry said "we haven't done anything yet", while republicans fired back with House Speaker Boehner saying "The Senate needs to hold tough; the President isn't negotiating with us."

Meanwhile, the most provoking comments came from tea-party caucus member Fleming, who said "It's very clear to us he does not now, and never had, any intentions of negotiating", adding there is "definitely a chance we're going to go past the deadline."

At an unusual Sunday Senate session, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid had a more optimistic approach when talking to reporters though, saying that after talks with Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell, "I'm confident Republicans will allow the government to open and extend the ability of this country to pay its bills."

However, as the WSJ reports, "although Mr. Reid and others expressed optimism that the impasse would be broken, senior aides in both parties said it appeared unlikely that negotiations would produce a deal Sunday in advance of Monday's opening of U.S. and world financial markets, which are starting to show jitters about the standoff."
