US jobless claims drop to 277k for the week ending January 1st
FXStreet (Mumbai) - The U.S. Labor Department today reported a fall in jobless claims for the week ending January 1st. The number of Americans filing claims for unemployment benefits for the week ending January 1st stood at 277,000, a decrease of 10,000 from the previous week's unrevised level of 287,000. Continuous claims came in at 2.230 million.
The 4-week moving average was 275,750, marking a decrease of 1,250 from the previous week's unrevised average of 277,000.
The number of Americans filing claims for unemployment benefits for the week ending December 26th had increased by 20,000 to a seasonally adjusted 287,000 last week, highest reading recorded since July this year.
The non-farm payroll data will be released tomorrow by the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Markets broadly expect the non-farm payroll figures for December to come in at 200,000, lower than November’s 211,000. The labor market has in the last few months shown signs of strengthening.
