Russia's national anti-terrorist committee: 9 killed, 20 injured in blast - Reuters
USD/RUB is stable on the tragic news of the underground explosion and what has been confirmed as an attack. The explosion occurred on Metro train in the Russian city of St Petersburg and at least 10 were killed with dozens injured from a 'briefcase' bomb. Tere has been a CCTV image released of a suspected attacker at the station and the blast was reported to have been caused by shrapnel-filled device. However, another unexploded bomb was deactivated at another station as well.
Meanwhile, the ruble's strength continues in the broader picture for 2017. In fact, the Russian Ruble has been the best performing emerging market currency at times dropping below the 60 handle and en route to the 55 handle. There has been some concern over the strength of the currency, certainly considering it has gone in the opposite direction of oil. Indeed, the currency has rattled folks in the Ministry of Finance and has even drawn the attention of the Kremlin considering the state-owned energy sector's costs are mostly in rubles, its revenues are in dollars.
