Merkel warns EU crisis not over yet

FXstreet.com (Łodź) - Delivering the state of the nation address at the Bundestag on Wednesday, German Chancellor Angela Merkel said that the current calm situation in the Eurozone is deceptive and that efforts have to be made to create a real union in the area.

That can only be done through modifications to the Lisbon Treaty, the Chancellor said. She emphasized the importance of spurring EU growth and employment and called for a quick introduction of the banking union.

"A quantum leap is needed to emerge stronger from this crisis," she said.

Merkel also stated that Germany remained the growth engine of Europe, and assured that optimism in the country was at its highest since the fall of the Berlin Wall. She listed maintaining German competitiveness as one of her top priorities.
