“Tensions between the two allies, which are both NATO members, escalated when the Trump administration announced its decision to provide Syrian Kurdish fighters with military equipment to fight against Islamic State in Syria. Turkey regards the Kurdish militia group YPG as a terrorist group that allegedly has ties to the separatist Kurdish PKK in southeast Turkey. The Turks are concerned that any weapons that the YPG may receive from the US could be used against them.
