UK election: Scenarios with a hung government

There are a number of options after a hung parliament has now been confirmed, with conservatives failing to secure 326 parliament seats.

A coalition may take weeks to get formed, despite the last time around, in 2010, the Conservative and Lib Dem coalition only took 5 days.

The first option is for the incumbent PM May is to given the first opportunity to form a majority government.

May will remain in power for now, however, if she fails to command a majority, the tradition is that she should resign. Should May resign, then Corbyn would be given the chance to form a government. 

Other options that do not involve seeking to form a coalition government are if May tries an agreement with smaller partys. These minor parties, while not getting ministerial positions, would get some concessions.

Lastly, May could decide for a minority government and try and negotiate every time with minor parties. This type of government would be doomed to fail, especially when the country needs a government with a strong mandate.
