China's trade surplus with the US narrowed in December

China trade surplus with the US – a closely watched metric amid the Sino-US trade war – narrowed in December, although the 2018 figure was the highest on record.

China’s December trade surplus with the US fell to $29.87 billion from $35.54 billion in November. That, however, is unlikely to calm nerves, as the 2018 surplus 17 percent from a year ago to hit $323.32 billion - the largest in more than a decade, according to a CNBC report.

Notably, exports to the US jumped 11.3 percent on-year in 2018, while imports registered a growth of just 0.7 percent over the same period.
