S&P 500 Index stays calm after renewing all-time highs

  • Major equity indexes in the US trade near Thursday's closing levels.
  • Energy stocks remain on the back foot as oil recovery loses steam.
  • Technology shares trade in the positive territory after the opening bell.

Wall Street's main indexes opened near Thursday's closing levels on Friday amşid varying performances of major sectors. As of writing, the S&P 500 Index, which notched a new record high of 4,466, was flat on the day at 4,462. Additionally, the Dow Jones Industrial Average was up 0.2% at 35,575 and the Nasdaq Composite Index was posting small daily losses at 14,800.

With crude oil prices failing to build on the recovery witnessed earlier in the week, the Energy Index is losing 0.4% after the opening bell. On the other hand, the Communication Services Index is the top performer on Friday, gaining 0.33%.

Later in the session, the University of Michigan's Consumer Sentiment Index for August will be looked upon for fresh impetus.
